One day seminar: Multiculturalism, Ethics and the War on Terror

Deadline: 14.03.2008.

A one day seminar will be held at the University of Birmingham on Friday 14th March 2008 as part of the ESRC Seminar Series ‘Ethics and the War on Terror: Politics, Multiculturalism and Media’

The theme of this seminar is identity and multiculturalism in the context of the 'War on Terror' including issues relating to gender and community, citizenship and community responsibilities.

Confirmed speakers include:

Professor Helen Fenwick and Mr Aaron Baker (University of Durham).

Dr Basia Spalek, University of Birmingham: 'Muslim Communities as Active Citizens: Community Engagement for the purposes of Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Radicalisation'.

Dr Saul Newman, Goldsmiths College, University of London: 'Imprisoning Politics: the logic of security and the undermining of democracy'

Professor Anne Phillips, London School of Economics: 'What’s culture got to do with it? Male violence and the backlash against multiculturalism’

There are a limited number of places available on the seminar so we would request that those who are interested in attending contact Helen Harris at Birmingham - H.L.Harris@bham.ac.uk <mailto:H.L.Harris@bham.ac.uk>  - as soon as possible. We particularly encourage the attendance of PhD students researching in this area. There is no charge for the day and lunch and refreshments are provided. Request for standard rail travel support can be considered but because of budget constraints priority has to be given to PhD students and presenters.
