University of Exeter, Up to three full-fee scholarships available
Fee discount available for high-achieving students

Available at campuses in both Streatham (Exeter) and Tremough (Falmouth, Cornwall) Against the logic of no alternative that is central to neo-liberal discourse about economic globalisation, the global justice movement insists that another world is possible. The Exeter MA in Critical Global Politics is an inter-disciplinary programme that brings together international relations and political theory staff to examine the relation between the existing global order and other possible worlds advocated by transnational social movements. It explores the links between academic scholarship and political activism in terms of the critique of existing global arrangements and analysis of how these are sustained. Rather than accepting prevailing social and power relations as the given framework for action, the origins of these relations are investigated together with the possibilities of their transformation.

The MA provides an introduction to a range of critical approaches in normative international political theory, including analytic, egalitarian, radical democratic, neo-Marxist, feminist, post-structuralist and psychoanalytic perspectives.

The core module examines how power operates in global politics via an exploration of the theme of empire in critical twentieth century political thought. Students will be introduced to a range of thinkers who have used the concept of empire to analyse the production of global power relations. The insights and limitations of these approaches will then be examined in relation of a range of contemporary practices and issues in world politics.   Recommended options provide specialist training in relation to a range of issues such as: climate change and environmentalism; indigenous land rights; the global justice movement; aid and development; peace operations; human rights; and international security. The programme will appeal to those with interests in political theory, international relations, security studies and activist politics. http://www.huss.ex.ac.uk/politics/postgrad/ma/cgp.htm
