ISA 09 Panel Proposal: *Rethinking Equality for International Relations

Deadline: 26.05.2008.

Equality has not been a concept of much interest for International Relations. Either eliminated as a dangerous presupposition of the state of nature or postponed in a liberal prioritisation of liberty, equality has mostly been approached negatively, through an engagement with inequality and poverty.

What does it mean to offer a positive rethinking of equality for international political? How can the concept of equality inform an emancipatory and progressive politics? This panel proposes to engage with conceptualisations and empirical problematics of equality from a series of different perspectives: critical security studies, cosmopolitan political theory, human rights, emancipation and resistance, feminist and poststructuralist critiques of equality. We also welcome theoretical papers that address reformulations of equality in the work of Jacques Rancière, Etienne Balibar or Alain Badiou.

If you are interested in submitting a paper for this panel, please email Peter Nyers (nyersp@mcmaster.ca <mailto:nyersp@mcmaster.ca>) or Claudia Aradau (c.e.aradau@open.ac.uk <mailto:c.e.aradau@open.ac.uk>) by 26 May 2008. The panel will be submitted to the International Political Sociology section.
