ISA Panel -Call for papers: 'Risk, Liberal Governance, and Global Politics'

Source: Luis Lobo Guerrero, Deadline: 25.05.2007.

Liberal governance proceeds through a complex combination of technologies of risk. Managerial theories already speak of 'the risk management of everything' and political and security discourses are full of allegories to risk, the management of risk, and opportunities of/for risk.Risk has become part of the contemporary liberal ethos and the international studies community is yet to develop the challenge of interpreting what this means to global governance. This panel poses the following questions:

How are translations of uncertainty into risk performing orders of governance? How are the moral economies that result from technologies of risk constitutive of the liberal ethos that characterise the Western world? How can interpretations of the ancillary ethos of risk management fertilise current understandings of global politics?

This panel invites papers that transcend technical descriptions and interpretations of risk assessment and risk management. It is intended to further understandings of how technologies of risk instantiate security within liberal regimes. It aims at beginning a debate between International Political Economy and Security Studies in relation to technologies of risk.
