Doris Singleton, who played one of the neighbors of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo in the television classic, “I Love Lucy,” has died at age of 92.
Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, confirmed the death on her Facebook page. Singleton died on Tuesday, the same day as the writer and director, Nora Ephron.
Arnaz recognized them both in her message: “They were loved and appreciated and will be missed,” she wrote. Singleton’s death was also reported by Variety and Hollywood Reporter.
Her character, first called Lillian Caroline Appleby appeared in 10 episodes. She also starred as Lucy’s neighbor, the wife of the owner of a radio station.
“In a way, she was Lucy’s nemesis because both had young children,” Singleton said in an interview in 2005 for the Archives of the Foundation of the American Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “There was some rivalry between them, but Lucy had to be good with Caroline because her husband was the owner of the radio station.”
Harpo Marx was the star guest at one of the episodes. “Harpo gave a concert later,” said Singleton, adding that she loved this chapter. Fred and Ethel Mertz, played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance were the best friends of Ricardo in the series. Frawley and Vance died in 1966 in 1979.
